After a quick registration and getting acquainted with our sturdy mountain bikes, we’ll have a brief overview of the day’s adventure before setting off.

Stop 1: Pedalling Through History at Ancient Arikamedu (1000 BC – 1300 AD)

If the Silk Road connected East and West by land, the maritime routes were India’s lifeline to the world. As you cycle along the serene backwater mangrove stretch towards Arikamedu, picture the ancient mariners who navigated these waters centuries ago. Researchers believe South Indian kingdoms, guided by the currents and even the paths of turtles, forged trade connections with Europe, Southeast Asia, and ancient China.

Pondicherry, then a significant emporium on the Coromandel Coast, was a vibrant hub of this maritime trade. Imagine ships docking here, laden with exquisite glass beads, intricate terracotta figurines, and fine pottery like Arretine and rouletted ware. Even fragments of amphorae jars, once containing precious olive oil, fine wine, and the pungent fish sauce known as “garum,” whisper tales of distant lands.

As we explore the approximately 35 acres of Arikamedu, now a tapestry of mango groves, swaying palms, and lush tropical dry evergreen woods, keep an eye out for the vibrant present mingling with the ancient past. You might spot a flash of iridescent blue as a kingfisher takes flight or the comical sideways scuttle of miniature fiddler crabs, their colourful claws waving in a fascinating mating display.

Stop 2: Unveiling the Secret Beauty of Ruby Beach

Prepare to be captivated by one of Pondicherry’s best-kept secrets: Ruby Beach. Nestled on the opposite side of the bustling port mouth, this pristine stretch of shoreline offers a visual feast. It’s a true hidden gem, and our cycling route will lead us to its sandy embrace.

The views here are simply magnificent. To one side, the modern lighthouse stands tall, sentinel over the river mouth and the busy port harbour. Your gaze will then sweep across the panoramic coastline of Pondicherry, marked by its distinctive extended pier structures reaching out into the azure sea. Watch as colourful fishermen’s boats bob gently on the waves and catamarans are prepared for their next venture, their nets meticulously arranged.

Turn your gaze the other way, and the seemingly endless shoreline of Ruby Beach stretches southward, a golden ribbon meeting the horizon. Feel the tranquillity of this lesser-known paradise, a world away from the bustling promenade.

Stop 3: Immersing Yourself in the Soul of Veerampatinam and Diamond Beach

Our cycling journey now takes us into the heart of Veerampatinam, Pondicherry’s largest fishing village. Notice the wide, organized layout of the town, all centred around the ancient and powerful Sengazhuneer Amman Temple.

Legend has it that a local fisherman hauled a blood-oozing wooden log in his net. That night, the feminine deity appeared to him in a dream, instructing him to build her an abode. This temple, radiating ancient energy, stands as the village’s revered guardian.

Veerampatinam is also famous for its grand temple car festival, a tradition that even dates back to French colonial times. Remarkably, the Governor and Chief Minister still participate in the customary pulling of the massive temple car around the village. We’ll take time to visit this significant temple, absorbing its spiritual atmosphere and unique history.

Just a short cycle away lies Diamond Beach, a vibrant hub of local life. Here, colourful fishing boats are docked, their nets drying in the sun. You’ll find bustling snack stalls and small shops catering to visitors, offering a glimpse into the daily rhythm of the fishing community. As the afternoon light softens, our cycle to this spot will immerse you in the sights, sounds, and smells of this authentic fishing village, connecting you with the local culture and its warm-hearted people.

Stop 4: Witnessing Nature’s Masterpiece at Blue Flag Eden Beach

Our final cycling destination for the day is the remarkable Eden Beach, located right here in Veerampatinam. What makes Eden Beach so unique is its fascinating landscape – a beautiful blend of lagoons, tranquil backwaters, micro patches of lush mangroves, swaying coconut trees, and a wide expanse of pristine white sand.

As Pondicherry graces the eastern coast, opportunities to witness the spectacle of a sunset over the water are rare. Eden Beach is a precious exception. Here, the vast expanse of the backwaters meeting the horizon creates a breathtaking canvas for the setting sun’s fiery display. Keep an eye out for the local avian residents – you might spot elegant kingfishers, graceful herons, stately storks, swift pipers, and soaring gulls adding to the picturesque scene. This is the perfect place to conclude our beach cycling adventure, soaking in the tranquillity and the vibrant hues of the twilight sky.
