Alamparai Fort Ruins and Backwater Lagoon

Alamparai is a coastal village about 50 km north of Pondicherry on the East Coast Road, known for the ruins of an 18th-century fort beside a backwater lagoon. The fort was built in the Mughal era, held by the French and destroyed by the British.

A fort between sea and lagoon

Little remains of Alamparai’s walls, but the setting is striking: crumbling brick bastions on a sandbar where the backwater meets the Bay of Bengal. Its history covers three empires in one century.

With the fishing community

The best way to understand the place is from the water. Local fishermen take you across the lagoon by boat and share what life is like in the coastal villages. It is a slow, scenic half day that suits families and photographers.
