Fire, emerald and gold
Tiruvannamalai is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, the five temples of Shiva linked to the elements, and represents fire. Its vast Arunachaleswarar Temple has towering gopurams. Above the town rises Arunachala, a hill that pilgrims treat as Shiva himself.
In the 20th century the town became known around the world through Sri Ramana Maharshi, whose ashram still welcomes visitors for quiet sitting and meditation.
